Description
- Alyssum ‘Snow Ball’ is a cultivar of sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) known for its dense, low-growing form and profusion of white flowers. It is commonly used as a groundcover, in borders, or as a “spiller” in containers and hanging baskets.
- Appearance: ‘Snow Ball’ produces a continuous display of tiny, white, four-petaled flowers that form a dense, carpet-like mat. The plant has small, lance-shaped, grayish-green leaves. Fragrance: The blossoms have a delicate, sweet, honey-like scent that is especially noticeable on warm evenings. Growth habit: It has a compact and spreading growth habit, typically reaching a height of 4 to 6 inches and spreading up to 10 inches wide.
- Soil – The plant thrives in average, well-draining soil. It is tolerant of a variety of soil types and pH levels but does not do well in waterlogged conditions.
- Fertilizing – In-ground plants typically don’t require much fertilizer unless the soil is poor. For container plants or to encourage more blooms, apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer monthly.
- Water – Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture is key for the best and longest bloom period. Container plants may need more frequent watering.
- Sunlight – ‘Snow Ball’ grows best in full sun, which means at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. It can tolerate partial shade, particularly in very hot climates where it can benefit from protection from intense afternoon sun.
- Pruning – To encourage new growth and a fresh flush of blooms, shear the plants back by about one-third to one-half after the first major flowering has faded.
