Description
- Salvia ‘Oxford Blue’ (typically Salvia horminum or Salvia viridis) is a popular annual clary sage known for its striking, deep blue-purple bracts that provide long-lasting colour in gardens and floral arrangements.
- Sowing Method: These are light germinators, so press seeds gently into the soil surface rather than burying them deeply. Timing: Indoors: Start 5–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Outdoors: Direct sow in spring once the soil has warmed, or from October to February in India for winter blooms.
- Sunlight: Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) for the most intense blue colour.
- Temperature: Optimal germination occurs between 18°C and 24°C.
- Germination Time: Expect sprouts in 7 to 21 days.
- Care: Maintain moist soil during germination but avoid waterlogging once established, as they are relatively drought-tolerant. Pinching the growing tips when the plant reaches 15 cm can encourage a bushier habit.
