Description
- Dolichos lablab “Bushy Broad Pod” refers to a compact, non-climbing variety of the hyacinth bean (also known as Lablab purpureus), characterized by its short, semi-erect growth habit and wide, fleshy pods. Unlike traditional pole varieties that require a trellis, these bushy types typically grow to a height of 45–75 cm and are ideal for home gardens or container planting
- Plant Type: A dwarf, bushy, and self-supporting annual or short-lived perennial. It does not produce tendrils and grows quickly in warm, bright conditions. Pods: Features broad, flat pods that are typically green or light green, though some varieties exhibit purple pigmentation. The pods are harvested at a tender, immature stage for use as a vegetable. Flowers: Typically produces clusters of white or purple flowers. Flowering generally begins 50–60 days after sowing. Seeds: The pods contain 2 to 8 seeds that can be white, brown, or black
- Soil and Climate: Thrives in well-drained loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–8.5. It is drought-hardy but sensitive to frost and waterlogging.
- Sowing: Direct sowing is best; seeds should be planted about 2.5–3 cm deep. For bushy types, a spacing of roughly 60 cm between rows and 30 cm between plants is recommended.
- Container Gardening: Bushy varieties can be grown in pots or grow bags sized 36–60 cm.
- Harvesting: Fresh pods can be harvested within 60–100 days of sowing.
