  • Dolichos Lablab (commonly known as Sem, Hyacinth Bean, or Indian Bean) is a versatile, high-protein leguminous creeper grown widely in tropical regions. The narrow pod variety, such as the CO. 5 pole type, is specifically prized for its succulent, less fibrous pods that are ideal for fresh vegetable use
  • Plant Type: A vigorous climbing vine (pole type) that can reach lengths of 3 to 6 metres. It requires sturdy support like a trellis or bower to thrive. Pod Appearance: Narrow pod varieties typically produce long, slender, and tubular green pods. For example, the CO. 5 cultivar has pods approximately 13.4 cm long and only 1.5 cm wide. Foliage & Flowers: Features large, trifoliate heart-shaped leaves and produces fragrant, ornamental clusters of white or purple flowers.
  • Ideal Climate: Thrives in warm, tropical, or subtropical environments (18–30°C) and is highly drought-tolerant.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained loamy or sandy loam soils with a pH between 4.5 and 7.5.
  • Sowing Season: In India, it is best sown during the summer or monsoon (April to August/September).
  • Harvesting: The first harvest usually occurs 60 to 75 days after sowing. Pods should be picked while young and tender before they become tough and fibrous.
  • Nutritional: High in protein (20–25%), dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals like calcium and iron.
