  • Swiss chard is a popular leafy vegetable that is actually a beet but is grown specifically for its edible stems and leaves. Swiss chard is full of nutrients like vitamins A, and K and is high in fiber and antioxidants. Chard leaves can be eaten raw and cooked, and raw Swiss chard leaves are less bitter than cooked.
  • Sowing method: Direct Seeds sowing depth: 1.25-1.5 cm Sowing season: Early spring to mid-summer Germination Time: 7-10 days Seeds germination temperature: 12-23°C Harvesting time: 50-60 days after planting Germination percentage: 70%
  • Water – Swiss chard water requirements are normal; water regularly at the base of the plant during dry climates and avoid wetting the leaves.
  • Soil – To plant Swiss chard, use well-draining, loamy, and good-quality soil that contains organic matter.
  • Sunlight – Swiss chard needs full direct sunlight but it also grows in partial shade.
  • Temperature – The minimum temperature for growing Swiss chard is 10 °C and the maximum is 30 °C.
  • Common pests – Certain pests such as leaf miners, slugs, aphids, cutworms, and caterpillars attack Swiss chard plants, and mildew and leaf spot disease infect plants. To avoid these insects and diseases, use neem oil or put a net over your container or you can also keep the pot indoors.
